Movement Based Theater Workshops
Since
2001, I have been participating in a series of workshops sponsored
by Los Angeles Unified School District for both teachers and
students. The workshops, held at the Actor's Gang performance
space in Hollywood, guide its participants through the process
of creating original dance theater pieces, with a variety
of themes. For the teachers it is an opportunity to discover
a blueprint of sorts for them to go back to their own schools
and create similar theater pieces; for the students, it is
a great opportunity to meet and work with students from other
schools, getting to know each other within the safe and fun
context of the performing arts.

LAUSD
Student Choreography Workshops
I
participated in a series of workshops for middle and high
school students from throughout the Los Angeles Unified School
District held at WAC and at The Debbie Allen Studios in Culver
City. The focus of my workshops was creating autobiographical
movement based dance theater. I led the students through the
process of moving and writing and performing autobiographical
work as an ensemble and utilized the students' original choreographies
as part of the dance elements of the piece. The students were
enthusiastic and receptive and hopefully all left with a practical
sense of how to begin to use their stories and choreographies
to create original dance theater in their own schools and
groups.

Trip to
Costa Rica- For several weeks, I was in Quepos/ Manuel Antonio
in Costa Rica, enjoying the beaches and the rainforest, and
taking a well-deserved vacation. More interestingly, I enrolled
in Spanish language immersion classes at COSI (Costa Rica
Spanish Institute), and had the opportunity to study and travel
the countryside with a great teacher named Norman; and for
a few days, to teach basic English to some absolutely adorable
kids in the local elementary school.
I had hoped to come back rested, relaxed, and ready to enter
grad school. It was a beautiful place and extremely therapeutic,
but the events of September 11 sort of destroyed the relaxed
and rested feeling. It was terrible watching the events unfold,
being so far away, out of my country.
