LAUSD Student Choreography Workshops
I
participated in a series of workshops for middle and high
school students from throughout the Los Angeles Unified School
District held at WAC and at The Debbie Allen Studios. The
focus of my workshops was creating autobiographical movement
based theater. I led the students through the process of moving
and writing and performing autobiographical work as an ensemble
and utilized the students' original choreographies as part
of the dance elements of the piece. The students were enthusiastic
and receptive and hopefully all left with a practical sense
of how to begin to use their stories and choreographies to
create original dance theater in their own schools and groups.
July
1- August 5, 2001
I
participated in a multi-cultural symposium entitled, "Family
Traditions"' hosted by Peter Tokofsky, professor of Folklore
in the Dept. of World Arts and Cultures. Included in the five
week project was several fascinating presentations on different
world cultures by a variety of authors and reserachers --
the holiday and life celebrations found in various cultures.
In
addition, several former Marshall Theatre Workshop students
and I did a rather moving presentation for the symposium based
on our personal experiences being involved with Theatre Workshop.
We all spoke about the process of creating relevant, autobiographical
theater based on the real life experiences of hundreds of
students from a variety of backgrounds. The reaction to our
presention was quite positive and affirming. Thanks to those
students who took part in this very memorable day at UCLA.
