SYNOPSIS:
The Repertory Tour Ensemble is an intercultural/interdisciplinary
performing arts project sponsored by UCLA’s Department
of World Arts and Cultures. The goal of this project is the
creation and performance of an original, autobiographically
based dance theater production to be performed for LAUSD students
at the newly renovated Glorya Kaufman Dance Theater. The production
will incorporate original text, music, dance, and movement,
and will be completely collaborative in nature: developed,
created, and performed by the college students enrolled in
the class, in collaboration with instructor Kevin Kane.
This years
show, “Shelter” explores contemporary issues of
hunger, famine, need, desire, relief, taking, and giving through
text, music, dance, and movement. The cast is young, energetic,
very talented, and notably diverse in terms of backgrounds
and performance skills. We have a strong balance of men and
women who are UCLA students, many of whom are alumni of local
high school performing arts programs. Our intention is that
the piece might serve to initiate meaningful dialogue regarding
relevant contemporary issues that are facing our students.
In addition, we are hoping that the show will serve as an
outreach of sorts. “Shelter” is an opportunity
for local high school students to experience the performing
arts being created at UCLA- work from an academic community
that truly values diversity and personal expression in the
arts. High school students will gain insight into UCLA’s
Department of World Arts and Cultures and learn a bit about
what it would take for them to follow a course of education
in this department, at UCLA, or at any college or university.
